Created in 2019 for Tate Modern, her ‘Fons Americanus’ represents the African diaspora and questions how we remember history in our public monuments.
In fact, ‘Fons Americanus’ is inspired by the Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace London. But instead of celebrating a colonial empire, it offers a powerful critique.
Kara Walker uses water as a key theme, referring to the transatlantic slave trade. According to the artist, “this is a piece about oceans and seas traversed fatally”.
